Cork is made from water-resistant and buoyant material. The bung is made from the bark of oaks. The tree is not chopped completely. Actually, only ½ of the bark is removed at a given time. This is a labor-intensive methodology performed by experts using special equipment and complex logistics. It requires stripping the delicate bark from a large tree, cutting it into even pieces and transporting it to the processing factory. Perhaps, this is one reason why cork stoppers are more costly.

Natural or 100 percent cork is highly recommended for use. It is the only variety that produces positive environmental effects. Natural stoppers are used for approximately 80 percent of 20 billion bottles of wine manufactured annually. Due to the cellular structure of corks, these can be condensed easily once it is inserted into a bottle and expands to form a rigid seal. The internal diameter of glass bottle necks is relatively inconsistent. That is why the capability to seal owing to flexible contraction and spreading out has become an important feature.

Some wine producers have transferred to synthetic corks but natural corks still control more than 60 percent of the market. Thus, wine cork holders remain to be popular products and more designs are being made by novelty companies throughout the world.
